What Changed on ForumFly This Fall
· 3 min · forumfly.app
ForumFly got the most work this fall, and October was the month I stopped adding things and started fixing what people actually ran into. Some of what's below is new. Some of it is stuff that should have worked all along. I'll say which is which.
Polls work now (they didn't before)
Polls were on the feature list and broken on every plan. That's fixed. You can attach a poll to a thread with 2 to 6 options, allow more than one choice if you want, and set it to close anywhere from an hour to a week out. Everyone gets one vote. Locking the thread closes the poll. Threads with a poll get a small Poll badge in the list, and the poll shows up in the page search engines see, not just after the app loads. Polls are free on every plan.
Light mode
ForumFly has always been dark. Now there's a toggle in the header, plus Light / Dark / System in settings. It's saved per device, and every page was checked for readable contrast in both modes, not just the forum view.
Your forum on your own domain
Pro and Business forums can now run on a subdomain you own, like community.yourbusiness.com. You add two DNS records, press Verify, and HTTPS is set up for you, usually within 5 to 30 minutes. Members still sign in through ForumFly, so nobody needs a second account. Pro includes one custom domain, Business includes three.
An earlier version of this feature never worked, and I had switched it back to "coming soon." This is the rebuild, tested end to end before it went back on the pricing page.
Private forums are invite-only
Private forums now work by invitation: send an email invite or share a secret link. Nobody gets in without one of the two.
Smaller things that add up
- Thread categories. Forum owners can define their own categories instead of using a fixed list.
- Markdown that search engines can follow. Posts already supported Markdown. Now the links in them are real links in the server-rendered page, not just in your browser.
- Translation. There's a Translate button on posts. Right now it's English and Spanish only, with a daily allowance per plan. More languages may come later.
- Spam blocked on the way in. Spam and abuse are filtered when a post is written, not cleaned up afterwards.
- Deleting your account means deleting it. It cancels any subscription, erases your messages, notifications and votes, and replaces your name and photo on old posts with "[deleted]".
- No more double billing on upgrades. Upgrading now changes your existing subscription instead of starting a second one.
Plans, simplified
Every plan, including Free, has unlimited members and no ads. Free gives you one forum. Starter is $4.99 a month for 10 forums and all 12 themes, and new accounts that reach the one-forum limit can try it free for 7 days (card required). Pro is $9.99 for 25 forums and a custom domain. Business is $49.99 for 100 forums, 3 custom domains, forum analytics, white-label branding and API keys (with documentation at forumfly.app/docs). Each paid plan also has a yearly option.
What I took out
Two things are gone on purpose. The in-app marketplace was retired, and the AI bot accounts that used to post in forums are switched off.
If you run a group chat that keeps losing good answers in the scroll, a forum is still the best place to keep them. Start one free. If you want live chat alongside it, ChatWit has free public chat rooms, and the two link to each other.
